Arc Movement

The observation that the arc movement
occurs at the same contact gap for both
contact systems is in accord with previous
studies [36] where it was shown that a
minimum contact gap is requirement for arc
motion. However, in this study the most
significant delay in moving away from the
contact region occurs after this initial arc
motion, and in these tests the onset of rapid
arc motion bore no relationship to the
contact separation.
The waveform of arc voltage and contact
position when the contact opening velocity
of 1 m/s, using solenoid and piezoelectric as
mechanism to open the contacts, as shown in
Figure 8.4.

Arc Chamber Vent

There are seven variable parameters used to
investigate the effects on the mobility of the
arc root from the contact region. They are
contact material, arc chamber vent, peak
short circuit current level, contact velocity,
arc chamber material, the gap behind the
moving contact and supply polarity.

Piezoelectric as contact mechanism

The short circuit current experiment using piezoelectric as electrical contact in circuit breakers.

Arc voltages for piezoelectric and constant velocity 1 m/s contact systems and Contact trajectories for the two systems.

Have a look in the figure, the results was clearly showed.
